Apollon Quartet Plays Jazz
A Night in Tunisia, Cube-Metier

This set ought to have all the makings of a complete turkey, were it not for the sheer verve and brio this quartet brings to its performance. The mischievous delays on Night in Tunisia, the pizzicato interlude on Ruby My Dear, the deep-register walkin cello on Stolen Moments, the contrasting light and shade of a stunning Milestones – all show thought and wit at work here. Most of the arrangements are by D. Balakrishnan, who also contributes Tremors and Skylife – both are pastoral and lilting in effect – and his touch rarely deserts him. At times, the violins are too close to Grappelli for my comfort, but his infectious swing is just what this set needed to lift it from valient attempt to outright success. Another good reason to visit Prague.

Toto album by mohlo mít všechny předpoklady k tomu, aby se z něj stala úplná ptákovina, nebýt naprosté vervy a brilance, které tento kvartet vnáší do svého hraní. Škádlivá spoždování v Night in Tunisia, piccikátové mezihry v Ruby My Dear, hluboký rozsah krácejícího violoncela ve Stolen Moments, kontrastující světlo a stíny oslnujícího Milestones– to vše dokazuje promyšlenost a vtip v plném nasazení. Vetšina aranžmá je z pera D. Balakrishnana, který rovnež přispěl skladbami Tremors a Skylife– obě jsou pastorální a popěvné v konečném efektu – a jeho talent se málokdy vytratí. Na můj vkus se houslisté občas přespříliš blíží Grappellimu, avšak jejich nakažlivý swing je přesně to, co tuto desku pozvedlo od odvážného pokusu k naprostému úspěchu. Další dobrý důvod k návšteve Prahy.
